BLACKHEATH

Our History

Frank Hitchings (1843-1921) was a bricklayer and amateur astronomer who emigrated from Blackheath in London to New Zealand with his wife and two children in 1869.

Frank worked as a bricklayer and chimney sweep and once he had saved enough money he purchased the piece of land on Durham Street.  The original six terrace houses were built between 1877 and 1898 by Frank and his son Richard. The original terrace is heritage listed.  As his family grew, to a total of eight children, he built a larger house next door and eventually ended up with 10 terraced houses for his family which he called Blackheath Place and were owned by the family until 1983.

In 1984 the original six houses were converted to office suites and the other four houses were demolished and a replica terrace was built.

In 1991 a complimentary styled block was built on adjoining land to complete the complex as it stands today.
